My Bio

Janelle Sharp, a life-long resident of District 6 and proud mother of four children who learn and grow in our community, is committed to standing up for South Anchorage families while working to maintain and grow our wonderful Alaskan community.

Born and raised in South Anchorage where she is raising her own family. Her parents still live in this community, she knows what’s worth protecting and what needs to change.

With a background in science and systems, and experience leading ANSEP’s Anchorage Acceleration Academy, she's built programs that deliver real results for students and families. She knows how to navigate complex systems and how to get them working for people.

My Key Issues

Addressing substance abuse and mental health issues

Anchorage is the hub of our state. Because of that role, we absorb a disproportionate share of Alaska’s substance use and mental health challenges, while often being expected to fund and operate systems that serve far beyond our municipal boundaries. That reality places real strain on first responders, service providers, neighborhoods, and families. While Anchorage has many dedicated organizations and professionals doing good work, there are operational gaps in the system, gaps where people fall through, services don’t connect, and accountability becomes unclear. When care is fragmented, individuals can get lost between emergency response, treatment, housing, and long-term support. We need to tighten coordination within Anchorage’s system and more deliberately recruit partnership and support from the State, recognizing that these are statewide challenges being addressed locally. Anchorage should not be left to carry this burden alone. A safer Anchorage depends on compassionate care, clear accountability, and systems that actually work together, so people don’t get lost, and help reaches them when it matters most.

Invest in crime prevention

Crime prevention starts long before someone has contact with police or the justice system. It begins with strong families, connected neighborhoods, and communities where people look out for one another. When families have support, kids have stability, and neighbors feel invested in their community, we reduce the conditions that lead to crisis, substance misuse, and repeated involvement with emergency systems.

Promoting efficiency and accountability in government spending

Transparent budgets, audits that conclude with changes in the operations if needed, and reconciliation of budgets for departments and groups funded by the Municipality of Anchorage.
